5 Reasons to Love Summer

Summers in Iowa are unpredictable. This year has been just ridiculously hot (like for days on end) and the kids don't want to spend their time outside in the hot, humid, thick air. What ends up happening some days is, in between me trying to do dishes or vacuum the living room, I'm being a personal mediator for a children's version of the Mafia. Why are my kids so offended by each other all the time? They're kids. Go suck on an ice pop and work it out. So here are 5 reasons to LOVE summer, even on the hot and humid days.

  • Vitamin DInstantly, my mood is improved when I can get outside and watch my personal circus play instead of following them around inside and picking up messes the entire day. Is my house clean? Probably not. But it's not getting any dirtier with them outside. Winter Blues can take a hike, since we're safely soaking up some vitamin D. Don't forget your sunscreen, folks. You WILL still get a tan.

  • Long Days! This can also be a nightmare, since the kids don't think bedtime is appropriate until the sun goes down at 9:30 p.m. but let's focus on the positives. -You can stay outside longer and shirk house duties. (jk...kinda) -You have more time to get things finished! Need to mow the lawn? No problem. It's only 8pm,  and you have another hour left. -Supper doesn't have to be prepared until later, because the kids are having fun and they're not "bored hungry". -More time to learn new things: This year, Azlynn (barely 3) learned how to ride a bike without training wheels. (She still uses them, but only because she wants them? Crazy kid.) Longer days=More time to teach new things and learn new things.

  • Fires with FriendsIf you don't have some sort of fire pit to enjoy with friends, you're missing out. Some of the best conversations we've had have been around the fire pit, and the kids enjoy it to! Throw some meat on the grill, unthaw some frozen sweet corn, boil up a few potatoes and you've got a healthy, delicious meal to enjoy with friends. End of the day S'Mores are a bonus. ;) Granted, the kids don't like it when they have to go to bed while there's a party going on, so...we're sneaky, and pretend our friends are leaving until the kids fall asleep...works like a charm.

  • MOWING! Or whatever else people like to do outside... It's no secret that I love to mow. I'd mow everyday if I didn't have to pay for gas. Don't like mowing? First off, you crazy. Secondly, there are a billion things you can enjoy outside, even in the heat. If gardening is your thing (which...no thank you, but if you enjoy it, have at it) plant a little bed of flowers OR plant a few food items. Don't like gardening? I don't blame you. Learn how to build some stuff. I have loved the challenge of building what I need instead of buying it from the store. Start small and work your way to bigger projects. You may be surprised at what you can build!

  • The Beach!Who doesn't love a free activity? Iowa has some great beaches around, and I'm sure whatever state you're from has them, too. Load up some snacks, a few shovels (or even plastic cups), floaties/lifejackets, towels and a friend and head to the beach. The kids enjoy it, it wears them out, they're ready for bed at the end of the day and you got to sit on a beach and chill out...win-win. BONUS REASON TO LOVE SUMMER:We only have 18 summers with our kids. 18. Even on the worst, most stressful and chaotic days, I want to cherish each and every one of these moments with my kids. I only have 13 and 15 left with my two kiddos and I hear it doesn't slow down, no matter how much we want it to.Enjoy your summers with your family and friends!
